In immeasurable affection
for my dear friend, Jenni Mills

There is not a lot to say about this music except that the compositions were all written in 2016 and for once there is no free improvisation. Funny that I could get to four records before I did a straight set of tunes. I challenged myself to write a little more last year, and emerged with no fewer than 366 new pieces. That’s right: one a day. This was a very interesting process and demonstrated possibilities that I hadn’t known existed. The brief recording sessions that produced this disc seemed like something in the manner of landmarks as the writing went on. Perhaps there will be others in the months to come. We’ll see.

This music is for Jenni, whose last couple of years have been abominable and whose pain I can only barely imagine. The trust and the openness and the honesty we have shared are precious to me beyond estimation. I offer this album with my heart’s love.

From the specifically pianistic point of view I want to thank Andrea Keller who invited me to perform with her in her two-piano series at the Melbourne Recital Centre in June 2015, and Barney Wakeford and Andrew Lorien who had me to play solo at Colbourne Avenue in Glebe the following evening. These were great gigs at a difficult time and I’d also like to thank Joseph O’Connor, Tabitha Halley, Alison Urquhart, Virna Sanzone and Agostino Marcello in their connection. Some of the pieces on this disc were premiered at the Piano Day 2016 performance at Bennetts Lane, for which thanks are due to Luke Howard, Nat Bartsch, Georgina Lewis and Tim Coghill, as well as all the Bennetts peops and the sensationally generous audience. Sincerest thanks to Pat Monaghan and Andrew Ford, and to Chris Lawson, Gary Beadell, Tim Dunn, and Cheryl Orsini. Finally my loving thanks to my team, my angels: Sall, Oli, Fred and Lu-scoob – you glorious four.
