about

The difficult third solo piano album, following 'Freehand' (2002) and 'Life's undertow' (2012). Initially presented in May 2014 in the Salon at the Melbourne Recital Centre, in a recital entitled 'Reimagining the Sacred', and now recorded, mixed and mastered at Pughouse Studios, Thornbury, this program draws on music with which I became acquainted in my childhood. Improvisations deal with or move towards composed selections drawn from the hymnal or the liturgy, and the disc winds up (almost) with a Bach fugue. Very personal music - probably my most personal so far - because of the depth of my association with the written material, the length of time I have spent in its company, and my reflection on the relationship between what happened then and what happens now.

Andrew Ford writes:
'It's like a musical autobiography - or a memoir, at least... There's so much to say. There's not a note that seems extraneous here; source materials [are treated] with such respect and yet [pulled] apart unsparingly before [being put] back together. The Bach is a remarkably bold inclusion - brave, too...but beautifully played if I may say so. And The King's Highway is amazing: simultaneously ridiculous and (for some reason) astonishingly touching.'
